Mar 14 Plymouth Forum: Aging At Home

At the 10:00 a.m. Forum this Sunday, March 14, Debbie Anderson, MSW, will speak about a new concept in aging at home – called a “village” or virtual retirement community.  A grassroots organization called North East Seattle Together or NEST is now forming and is dedicated to ensuring that as we grow older, we can continue to live in our own home, in the neighborhood we love. It is an   innovative, new approach to “aging in place” that is inspiring neighbors to organize, incorporate, and take charge. These “virtual villages” build community and help reduce social isolation. It is modeled after Beacon Hill    Village in Boston, Mass. (www.beaconhillvillage.org). There are over 36 villages across the country with new ones forming every month.

NEST will serve neighborhoods in northeast Seattle (Bryant, Hawthorne Hills, Inverness, Laurelhurst, Maple Leaf, Matthews Beach, Meadowbrook, Ravenna, Roosevelt, Sandpoint, University District, View Ridge, Wedgwood, and Windermere).

The mission of NEST is to connect NE Seattle residents to community resources, and provide social and educational opportunities so that as members age they can live confidently in their homes and neighborhoods. NEST is   incorporated as a tax-exempt, non-profit organization that will be supported by membership dues. Examples of services that NEST is considering, which are typical of what other “villages” offer, include:

One number to call for everything you need
Transportation to the doctor’s and weekly grocery  shopping
Referrals to all kinds of in-home help such as handymen, house-cleaners and home health care
Personalized and creative problem-solving for all your needs

Fitness programs and walking groups

Social and educational events
Unique outings, private museum tours, seminars, intergenerational events

Strategic partnerships

Preferred provider relationships with local health care providers, fitness clubs and service organizations add special value for village members

Membership is open to all ages.  Volunteers of all ages play an important role in making the “village” sustainable and fun!

Come learn about it at this Sunday’s Forum, March 14, at 10:00 a.m. in Hildebrand Hall.
